BIOGRAPHY
I've
always wondered what makes good photographers different from
other people. I think we see images all around us, every day.
We have
a childlike vision of the world around us; we look at the way
light streams across the faces of our subjects. We photograph
people in their true character and in our photographs you can
see the honesty of who they are.
A photojournalist is trained to be a patient observer in the
background and to have certain instincts to create images that
convey not just what their subjects look like, but how they
feel at a prtticular moment in time. Our images stand apart
from other photographers because it is our goal to wait for
the
precise
moment to trip
the shutter
and reveal a special instant, a laugh, a cry or a look of awe.
I was a photojournalist with the Winston-Salem Journal for
ten years and before leaving to pursue a freelance career.
During my career at the Journal, I photographed everything
from presidential visits, hurricanes to hostage situations.
I have photographed all ranges of emotions and have been very
fortunate to be in situations I would never have experienced
outside the newspaper.
I won several awards in the Southern
Photographer of the Year contest, The North Carolina Press
Photographers contests,
and contributed to the Sigma Delta Chi award for community
journalism. I have had photographs published in "One Hundred
years of Photography with the W-S Journal, "Great Bike
Rides in and Around Winston-Salem", Dirt Rag, Bike Magazine,
USA Today, and the Washington Post.
Since starting a freelance career, I received the 2000 Emerging
Artist Grant from the W-S Arts Council, Won the Grand Award
in Photo essay and Series category of the council for advancement
and support of education District III awards competition for
photographing a "Day in
the Life" documentary for
the North Carolina School of the Arts and have had work exhibited
in the Bank of America Lobby of Charlotte, The Greenville Museum
of Art, The Light Factory in Charlotte, The Sawtooth Center,
The Hendersonville Arts Center, The W-S Convention and Visitors
Bureau and currently have work at the Green Hill Center for
the Arts in Greensboro and Mullen Advertising in W-S.
My freelance specialty is black and
white portraiture. I approach my work looking for the same
candid spontaneity
that I captured every day at the newspaper. I have
photographed families, individuals, weddings, and pets with
the same careful attention to detail, often capturing images
that are filled with warmth and humor.
I am available for documentary weddings, family portraiture
and yearly family documentary contracts, editorial, and advertising
assignments. Please take a few minutes to check out my
collections of ongoing documentary
projects.
